This is this Swan Theme from a Swan Lake by Tchaikowsky. Welcome to Flute School. My name is Jane Cavanagh. At the end of this piece, I'm going to tell you a tip that shows you how to cope with the gigantically long phrases in this piece.

Phrasing on the flute

Now, if you rewind that and have a look where I breathed, they're pretty good spots to breathe because they match up perfectly with phrases. This was originally written for orchestra, and that's an overplaying it. Overs can get through stupendously long phrases, so they wouldn't need to breathe as much as I did in this.

Now, there's a very good chance that you need to breathe more than what I did. And it's going to break up, especially that first phrase. So let me tell you something really important about breathing. The length of phrase that you can get through is directly proportional to how clear your sound is. Now, there's a reason for that, and I want to teach it to you.
