Two good tips for a less airy flute sound

Here are my top 2 tips for you to get rid of the "air" in your flute sound. It's easier and more logical than you might think to make your flute tone clearer and stronger!

How to get rid of the air in your flute sound

I have two excellent tips for you. So my name is Jane Cavanagh. I'm a flute teacher and I love teaching people the exact proper techniques to get faster progress. If you learn the tiny little techniques, like what I'm showing you today, you will see gigantic leaps forward in how quickly you sound better on the flute.

A fluffy flute sound means wasted air

An airy sound on the flute means you have wasted air when you're blowing. Now that is either from blowing too hard, or you have too big a hole and you have escaping air or you're blowing in the wrong direction. All of that makes your sound airy. So here are the two excellent tips for you to get rid of the air in your sound, and fix your embouchure.

Fix your embouchure and you will fix the air in your sound.

First flute tip for a clearer tone

So number one tip is to get a smaller hole in your mouth in your flute embouchure. When you play, this eliminates wasted air if the cause of your wasted air is too big a hole. And let me tell you for lots of people, that is the problem.

Second flute tip to get rid of the air

Number two tip to getting rid of the air in your flute sound is: stop smiling when you play the flute! If anyone has told you to smile when you play, don't do it. I'll tell you why in a sec, this is what I mean. So this is a good embouchure, and this is a bad flute embouchure.

This is why having a smiley embouchure is so bad for your flute playing. You'll be sharp like that. You'll be loud like that. And you won't be able to play high notes like this.

There you go. That was it. Demo of why not to have a smiley embouchure. If this is the first video you've seen of me, you might be thinking, oh my god, she cannot play the flute!! I can play the flute. I was demonstrating how to be bad.

You can control your intonation. You can control your dynamics and you have flexibility with your playing, which means you can jump around between high and low notes quickly and pretty much play anything you want.
